The Mayflower Compact

Why was America founded? The Mayflower Compact reveals the reason. It is the agreement for self-government that the first Pilgrims signed as they were anchored off the east coast of the New World, preparing to establish the first English Colony. It is named for the ship they were anchored in, and had made the voyage in, the Mayflower.

It says in part: "In the name of God...We whose names are underwritten...Having undertaken, for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith...a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia, do...combine ourselves together into a Civil body politick; for our better ordering, & preservation & furtherance of the ends aforesaid…In witness whereof we have hereunder subscribed our names...ye-11-of November...Anno Dom. [in the year of our Lord] 1620."

They said they came here "for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith."

Suggested applications:

  • God has a plan for our country.
  • Our nation’s roots are a hint to its ultimate purpose.
