The Cost of Raising a Child

Have you ever wondered how much it costs to raise a child? There are various estimates, but all agree itís going to cost a whole lot. On his radio show in 2004, Paul Harvey cited research that estimates it costs about $160,000 to raise a child. Parenthood.com puts the estimate a little higher than that, calculating that it costs $170,000 to raise a child to age 18 (for a family with a yearly income of about $50,000).

Itís expensive to raise a child. Maybe thatís why (according to a Newsweek article in January 2005), if Americans could have their wildest dreams come true, 38 percent would pick winning the lottery, and 1 percent would choose world peace.

Financial needs are just one kind of need. We also have physical needs, relationship needs, career needs, and so on. It is good to know that God has promised to meet his peopleís needs. (Philippians 4:19)
